About ACPL

Enriching the community through lifelong learning and discovery.
The plaza at the main library, Fort Wayne

A Brief History

In 2020 the Allen County Public Library celebrated 125 years of enriching our community through lifelong learning and discovery. Over the decades the library has  grown to consist of the main library in downtown Fort Wayne and thirteen branches in the city and outlying communities.

The Genealogy Center at the Allen County Public Library is the second largest family research center in the United States. Visitors from across the country and around the world rely on the Genealogy Center for its international collection of physical resources; free access to numerous databases; and knowledgeable staff.

ACPL has also joined with the Friends of the Lincoln Collection to build the Rolland Center for Lincoln Research. The center, scheduled to open Spring 2021, will showcase the immense collection of lectures, photos, and other original documents related to our nation’s 16th president that the library houses and curates.

In 2020 the library was visited 1.2 million times, limited by the pandemic. The library’s holdings consisted of almost 2.9 million items, with a circulation total of nearly 2.6 million physical items. That is in addition to a usage rate of almost 5.9 million for the library’s electronic materials.
